Potluck

October Country This is a great soft pop album. I think I found it under "folk," and it has elements of that (a Jack Johnsony kind of folk), but there's a lot more to Potluck. It's like listening to the radio in one of those rare summers where every popular song is great. The songs are all different from one another, but all memorable and fun. "Frozen Ground" is a perfect quirky pop love song. Great story-telling songwriting on every track. Favorite track: Frozen Ground.

about

Hello friends and friends to be!
I’m so excited to share my first official solo album, Potluck, with you. I produced the album myself, but this EP was born out of great collaboration. I had the opportunity to work with six talented songwriters, each bringing their own personal touch to a song on the album. Mason Jar Music helped me find the amazing instrumentalists featured on the record, and I couldn’t be happier with the result. Please check out some of MJM’s inspiring work at www.masonjarmusic.com.

Thank you to all my family and friends for allowing me to make this album my obsession for four months of writing, arranging, and recording. Thanks to Nick Sansano, David Kahne, Bob Power, and Errol Kolosine for their wisdom and encouragement throughout the production process. Thanks to my bosses Phil, Limor, and Tom at Adafruit Industries for inadvertently helping to fund the album, for being flexible with my hours, and for maintaining a work environment that supports creativity. Special thanks to Ian Davis for mentoring me through the orchestral arranging process, especially for his work with the horns on Track 3. Special thanks to Andrew Ellis, Phoebe Ryan, and Carrie Crowell for being the best friends and supporters I could ever ask for. Extra special thanks to Dan Knobler and Jon Seale, not just for the generous studio time, expert mixing, and thoughtful critique, but for constantly inspiring me by creating music that moves and empowers whoever has the privilege of hearing it.

Track Name: Fearful Lullaby
Are you afraid of the dark, my baby?
I said mother, oh mother I am
Lay here as still as you can my baby
And I’ll fill up your eyelids with sand

I cried myself to sleep
While the monsters were quietly creeping
Through the cracks in my door
Plundering sheets for to dream in

What if our house catches fire tonight?
She says, “baby, oh baby it won’t”
How do you know so much more than I do?
She says, “baby, oh baby I don’t”

I cried myself to sleep
While the flames melt my whole into hollow
And in the snow white morning
Shoveling ash from my pillow

What if I fall asleep tonight
And I know not the light of the morning?
With robbers and demons aflight
Oh, lying awake I am listening
Track Name: Say I'm Strong
Don’t call me so early
Cuz I don’t wanna talk
If there’s daylight
Turn it off

Even in Sunday’s best
I am not magnificent
I look fine
Nevermind

Heard you inside my head
You say, you say I’m strong

Wipe the fog from the glass
But I still can’t call you back
I am constantly cleaning
But the walls keep turning black

Heard you inside my head
You say, you say I’m strong
Track Name: Do My Best
This is the life I’ve been given
So I will do my best
To tie small pleasures with colorful ribbon
And hold high my chest

I’ll find the rhythm
In the broken and rattling pipes
Give me a dead tree
I’ll revive it. I’ll paint it white
I’d be a great success
If the measure were more the dog than its bite

This is the life I’ve been given
So I will do my best
To greet the morning without resistance
Shower and get dressed

Days in my father’s shirt
They make me a better man
He’ll work from dawn to dusk
Come home, wash the pots and pans
Gardens on weekends
Moves the earth with a gentle touch
But a great command

This is the life I’ve been given
So I will do my best
To uphold my family’s conviction
A truly good man never rests

Call me up at
Any hour on any night
Give me your sorrow
And I will do my best to give it flight
My luck is borrowed
So I’m trying to use it well
To do what’s right
Track Name: Frozen Ground
If I were living in a snow globe
Well I’d say you shook it up
All my possessions slowly float down
And settle in the backyard
All the things that I had buried
Well you quickly dug them up
Gently washed my dirty secrets
With a toothbrush and a cloth

All of my life
I’ve been waiting
For somebody to break me down
I was so stubborn
I was impatient
Til you came and you turned me around
Plowed a path in my frozen ground

I felt like I was hibernating
In the space between my ears
You woke me up to tell me
I’m borrowing your car
So I decided to go with you
And we drove around the block
You were always the explorer
And I the Plymouth Rock

All of my life
I’ve been waiting
For somebody to break me down
I was so stubborn
I was impatient
Til you came and you turned me around
Plowed a path in my frozen ground

All of my life
I’ve been waiting
For somebody to break me down
I was so stubborn
I was impatient
Til you came and you turned me around
Til you came and you turned me around
Plowed a path in my frozen ground
Track Name: Everything's Fine (feat. Anais Aida)
I scare myself
The claws I’ve dug so deep
Where the time has gone
And how things it’s done
Made a monster out of me

We once vowed
To love’s infinity
But lately you
Haven’t even had
The heart to talk to me

Everything’s fine
I promise
If everything’s fine
Then what is this?

I am sitting beside you
But I am far away
There’s an ocean between us
You look familiar
But I don’t know your face, oh oh
There’s no going back now
Memories take your place

I once thought
That you were tailor-made
But the thread is loose
And the cloth is too
And we can’t keep the colors from fading

The hopelessness
I can feel it in my bones
And the only thing
That keeps me here
Is the fear of being alone

Everything’s fine
I promise
If everything’s fine
Then what is this?

I am sitting beside you
But I am far away
There’s an ocean between us
You look familiar
But I don’t know your face, oh oh
There’s no going back now
Memories take your place
Track Name: Driving Northbound
Hopeless
I’ve run out of steam and I
Bought a ticket home
Cuz everybody seems to
Have it all figured out
And I’m just sitting in my room

A quiet place
With time to waste

91, I’ve got my snow tires on
The old hotel and the artificial pond
Violins and the orchestra will sound
Driving Northbound

Dead end
I’ve given all I can
I’m back where I began
Cuz everybody talks
They say I’m already washed up
I am no modern man

Wait awhile
You’re out of style

91, I’ve got my snow tires on
The old hotel and the artificial pond
Violins and the orchestra will sound
Driving Northbound
Track Name: Sardines (feat. Mree)
Underneath the stairs
No one will find me
Inside the pantry
I can see the bottoms of their shoes
Running from room to room

Clamoring through cupboards
The door swings open
I am discovered
Happy she found me first
Sometimes I am not cursed

And though her touch is accidental
The rub of an arm inflated
Oh, is her heart beating as fast as mine?

Sitting in the dark
I here them coming
My stomach grumbling
Pressed between her thigh and a pile of cans
God, where do I put my hands?

I shift to hide my grin
The crash of pans and they pile in
That’s how the game always ends
They push us closer together

And though her touch is accidental
The rub of an arm inflated
Oh, is her heart beating as fast as mine?
